North Beach's Third Thursday Is Back: An Evening Between Normandy Fountain and the Bandshell

Most nights out in North Beach have nothing to do with restaurant openings. Two public stages set the schedule: the plaza at Normandy Fountain, 7802 Rue Vendome, and the Miami Beach Bandshell at 7275 Collins Avenue. On the third Thursday of each month they share one free calendar, and the times are spaced so a single evening can include both.

That calendar started its new season last week. It runs every month through July. Here is how the evening works, what's on between now and the holidays, and where Giorgio Rapicavoli's Luca Trattoria fits in once it opens on Normandy Drive.

The City Program Holding the Night Together

The City of Miami Beach's Culture Crawl runs every third Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., October through July. Participating venues offer free exhibits, screenings and performances, and events are free unless a listing says otherwise. The City's partner list includes South Beach institutions such as The Wolfsonian, New World Symphony and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. North Beach has its own version of the night, centered on the plaza and the Bandshell.

At the Bandshell, the night is called North Beach Social, which the venue describes as "a free night of music for music-loving neighbors." Rhythm Foundation presents it with the City of Miami Beach as part of the Culture Crawl. The bookings lean toward Miami artists who are marking a milestone, releasing new music or launching a new project.

At the Fountain, the Normandy Fountain Business Association organizes the Culture Crawl programming. The City's listing for the season opener named the association as organizer and listed a free music event on the plaza from 6 to 8 p.m.

The season runs October through July, so North Beach gets ten of these Thursdays a year. Two of them are left in 2026.

How the Two Stages Split the Evening

October's opener shows how the night is laid out. The association's calendar billed it as Noche Sunset and Strings: singer-guitarist Nina Marie and singer-harpist Sarah Bomber playing "as the sun sets over North Beach," with the set starting at 6 p.m. Across the way at the Bandshell, doors opened at 7 p.m. for Les Greene & The Swayzees, and the show started at 8. The venue described the music as vintage soul and rock 'n' roll.

So the Fountain takes the sunset hour and the Bandshell takes the later show. Both were free, and the Bandshell asked for an RSVP.

Third Thursday Normandy Fountain Miami Beach Bandshell
October 15 Noche Sunset and Strings, from 6 p.m. Les Greene & The Swayzees, doors 7 p.m., show 8 p.m.
November 19 Watch the association's calendar Abstract Citizen with Black Nimbus, 7:30 p.m., free RSVP
December 17 Watch the association's calendar Mr. Pauer & Friends, 8 p.m., free RSVP

The Bandshell's November pick is Abstract Citizen, billed as modern jazz fusion and global sounds, with Black Nimbus on the same bill. December's North Beach Social is a holiday night with Mr. Pauer, whom the venue calls an "Electrópico Pioneer." The Fountain hasn't posted its November or December programs yet. Both the Normandy Fountain events page and the Bandshell calendar are the places to check the week of.

The Calendar Between Third Thursdays

The Thursday series sets the rhythm. The weekends between them carry more free and resident-friendly programming than most people expect, and the first two dates fall right after this post goes live.

  • Saturday, October 24, Normandy Fountain. The association's 7th annual Day of the Dead Salsa Party. Kids trick-or-treat and win prizes from 6 to 7 p.m., then Paula Zuleta and her band start the salsa set at 7.
  • Sunday, October 25, Bandshell. The free 3rd Festival de Bomba y Plena brings Puerto Rican bomba and plena with dance, artisans and food, starting at 5 p.m. with a free RSVP.
  • Sunday, November 1, Bandshell. O Cinema's annual screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show returns at 7 p.m., paired this year with a Día de los Muertos celebration. This one is ticketed.
  • Saturday, November 7, Bandshell. Roda de Samba with Soul Samba, billed as a Rio-style samba party at 8 p.m. Miami Beach residents get in free with ID.
  • Sunday, November 8, Bandshell. Dance NOW! opens its 27th season with Fall For Dance NOW!, contemporary dance outdoors at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, November 27, Bandshell. The Thanksgiving Roller Disco, free admission at 5 p.m. with a free RSVP.

The Fountain also runs programs outside the Thursday series. On October 4 the association started a once-a-month weekend movie night on the plaza with the Miami Film Festival. October's was Minions & Monsters, with a free treat for anyone in costume. Starting October 10, HIVE brought back its De La Fuente evenings, running 6 to 10 p.m. with live music, food and art. The association's calendar calls the Fountain "the heart of our neighborhood."

December's Bandshell schedule includes more than the Third Thursday. Nicole Henry returns on December 16 for her 13th annual holiday fundraising concert for Miami Music Project and SAVE. Matisyahu brings his annual Hanukkah tour on December 19. Both are ticketed, and they fall on either side of the December 17 North Beach Social. That makes the week before the holidays the busiest stretch on the Bandshell's calendar this year.

The Table Coming to Normandy Drive

Now the restaurant news. Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, of Eating House and Coral Gables' Luca Osteria, is opening Luca Trattoria at 933 Normandy Dr. in Normandy Isles. In September, Miami New Times listed it as a fall opening without a specific date.

For Rapicavoli and his longtime business partner, Alex Casanova, it's a return to a neighborhood they know. In a Miami New Times interview, Rapicavoli said the two "lived in North Beach for many years" while starting their careers and opening Eating House in 2012. He described the new restaurant to New Times as having "a slightly more laid-back feel due to its proximity to the beach and neighborhood atmosphere," while keeping "the same level of cuisine and service."

According to that New Times report, the menu will be familiar to Luca Osteria regulars, with a few additions: a stuffed pasta or two, more cuts of steak and a delicate fish dish. Bar manager and mixologist Eddie Fuentes is building the drinks around Luca's familiar cocktails plus new ones. The wine list will mix European, Argentine and classic Italian producers. Rapicavoli's nod to the neighborhood, as he told New Times: "You'll probably find a few more Malbecs on the wine list." Modern Luxury describes an Italian-American menu that may include a churrasco dish, and says much of the menu is still under wraps.

The restaurant matters for the same reason the calendar does. Normandy Drive leads into the Normandy Isles neighborhood around the Fountain plaza, and a sit-down Italian dinner there gives a Third Thursday or a Fountain weekend a natural place to start or finish. Until the opening is announced, "this fall" is all anyone has said publicly.

A bit farther south in Mid-Beach, Miami New Times reported that Bazaar Meat by José Andrés was scheduled to open October 22 at the Andaz Miami Beach, 4041 Collins Ave. For North Beach, that means one more dinner reservation within reach on a Bandshell night.

Planning Around the Two Calendars

Event pages change, so a few habits help:

  1. RSVP for the free Bandshell nights. North Beach Social, the Festival de Bomba y Plena and the Thanksgiving Roller Disco are free but use RSVP links from the Bandshell calendar.
  2. Bring a Miami Beach ID to Roda de Samba on November 7. That's what gets residents in free.
  3. Check the Fountain's page the week of. The association posts programs one at a time, and the November and December Culture Crawl sets aren't listed yet.
  4. Plan for a 6 p.m. start on Third Thursdays. The City's window runs 6 to 9 p.m. The Fountain's October set started at 6 and the Bandshell show at 8, which left time for dinner in between.
